2010 Sobriety Rocks Honorable Mention – Best Writing
Enough
by Madeline Curry
Preface: This is a poem about my sister, Stephanie. She has been suffering from drug and alcohol addiction for years. As a deal with the court, she was required to complete rehab in order to prevent going to jail. However, she was kicked out of rehab about a month ago, and was put in jail yesterday. This is for her, for her sadness, struggle, and unwillingness to surrender, and for everyone who knows somebody like her.
Sunlight through the window,
striking lines of shadows on your
gray and gloomy face.
It's cold inside concrete walls.
It's cold inside concrete hearts.
Tears hit the floor,
seep through the cracks.
They freeze and expand,
causing little eruptions of gravel.
No need for a spoon
to dig your broken self out.
You've got tears and "'I'm sorry's,"
and you think that's enough.
But until the light
creeps out of the darkness
to warm your face,
to glisten in your eyes,
and to brighten your soul...
and until the rain from Heaven
pours down into the cracks
of your every being, and breaks you,
nothing will ever be enough.
